A Guide to Muslim Burial Services in Central Ohio

Every soul will taste of death. And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have succeeded. For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception. (Quran 3:185)

STEP 2: Contact a funeral home. Our community has been using Rutherford Funeral Home on North High Street (614-299-1153) www.rutherfordfuneralhomes.com which has appropriate clean facilities. Not all funeral homes can provide washing tables with good drainage and hot and cold water at easy access for Islamic washing. Rutherford provides gloves and covering clothes and masks, to protect those preparing the body.

The deceased's body can be washed at the funeral home. Usually family members wash the body with the help of some members of the community if needed and desired.

We do not purchase coffins for our dead. A coffin from the funeral home is used temporarily to transport the shrouded body to the cemetery. The body is placed on its side in the grave, which here in Central Ohio is covered by a vault before it is covered with dirt.

STEP 3: Call one of the two cemeteries:

1. Fairview Memorial Park: In 1988, the IFCO signed a contract with Fairview Memorial Park to establish a cemetery for Muslims in Central Ohio. Any Muslim may be buried here.

Approximately 560 burial spaces have been reserved for use with a provision to expand in future. A designated area has also been reserved for baby burial. All burial spaces are designed according to Islamic law, i.e., facing the Qibla.

It is located at 5035 Columbus Pike, Lewis Center, Ohio - on Route 23 about 7 miles north of I-270 on the east side of the highway. To arrange for the burial at Fairview Memorial Park call 800-521-2881.

2. The Islamic Cemetery of Columbus: The Islamic Cemetery of Columbus was established in 2000 and is a part of a 10 acre site owned by the ISCO.

It is located at 3880 Sunbury Rd, Columbus, Ohio 43219 (south of Easton Mall). To arrange for the burial here, please contact Br. Derar Musa: (Cell) 614-843-8693, (Home) 614-846- 3118. (email:This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

STEP 4: Prayers for the deceased can be offered at any neighborhood mosque, please use the contact information in table above.

Burial Materials

The following materials will be needed for washing and wrapping the body: White material for the shroud, 3 pieces (or an odd number), each the length of the body's height plus a yard. The material is usually 60" wide. It must be sufficiently wide to wrap completely around the body with good overlap.

Bed sheets can be used. The material should be clean but need not be new. Strips of cloth are needed to tie the shroud, at least 3 and sometimes 5. Towels and washcloths are needed, and soap, shampoo, cotton and perfume.

Assistance for obtaining these materials – contact: Sr. Asmaa Mostafa (419 787 926 or 614 527-7777) or

 Sr. Hind Ouhammon (614 622 5984).

Burial Cost

Cost is associated with buying the cemetery plot; funeral home expenses (body transportation, facility use, escort, etc.) and cemetery expenses (Opening/closing the grave, vault, grave markers). Grave markers (headstones) can be purchased through the respective cemeteries.
